The mission of the United States Army is to preserve the peace and security, and provide for the defense, of the United States, the Commonwealths and possessions, and any areas occupied by the United States; to support the national policies; to implement the national objectives; and to overcome any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States.
The Army is the largest and oldest branch of the United States Military, and is responsible for land-based military operations. Control and operation is administered by the Department of the Army, one of the three military departments of the Department of Defense. The civilian head is the Secretary of the Army and the highest-ranking military officer in the department is the Chief of Staff, unless the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff or Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is an Army officer.
The two types of army personnel are enlisted men and commissioned officers. There are several paths to becoming a commissioned officer including Army ROTC, the United States Military Academy at West Point or the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, and Officer Candidate School. Certain professionals, physicians, nurses, lawyers, and chaplains are commissioned directly into the Army. The highest officer rank is the Five-Star General and the lowest is the Second Lieutenant.
Some highly specialized and uniquely qualified personnel are members of The United States Army Special Forces, also known as Green Berets. This is a Special Operations Force (SOF) of the United States Army tasked with five primary missions: unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, direct action, and counter-terrorism.
